You just picked up your new-to-you motorcycle. Great deal, solid bike, exactly what you wanted. One problem — it came with no key. Maybe the seller lost it years ago. Maybe the previous owner had it started with a screwdriver after losing the key and never replaced it. Maybe it was sold at auction without documentation. Whatever the story, you now have a motorcycle you cannot start, cannot move, and cannot register at the DMV without proving you can access it.
This happens more often than most people think. And the solution — while not always simple — is almost never as catastrophic as it seems in the moment. Here is exactly what to do for every major motorcycle brand.
First — Understand What You Are Actually Dealing With
Before calling anyone or doing anything, identify which key system your motorcycle uses. This determines everything about the replacement process.
Standard Mechanical Key (No Chip)
Older motorcycles — generally pre-2000 on most brands, and pre-2005 on some — use a simple mechanical key with no transponder chip. These bikes have no electronic immobilizer. The key is purely mechanical — it turns a cylinder to allow ignition. Replacing this key is similar to replacing a filing cabinet key — a skilled locksmith decodes the ignition cylinder and cuts a replacement.
If your bike is older and has no immobilizer, a mobile motorcycle locksmith is the fastest and most affordable solution. We can decode the cylinder on-site and cut a working key within an hour in most cases.
Transponder Key (Chip Key)
Most motorcycles made after approximately 2005 to 2010 — depending on the brand — use a transponder key with an embedded RFID chip. The chip must be programmed to the motorcycle's immobilizer system. Without a programmed chip the bike will not start even with a correctly cut blade.
For transponder key bikes the replacement process has two steps — cutting the blade and programming the chip. Both must be done correctly. A standard key machine at a hardware store cannot program the chip.
Smart Key / Proximity Fob
Premium motorcycles — BMW Keyless Ride, Honda Gold Wing Smart Key, certain Harley-Davidson models with H-FOB, select Yamaha models — use proximity fobs with no physical blade. Programming these requires manufacturer-specific diagnostic equipment.
What to Do by Brand
Honda — No Key
Honda uses HISS (Honda Ignition Security System) on most models from approximately 2003 onward. Without a working key the HISS immobilizer must be reset using professional diagnostic equipment.
Do not attempt to hotwire a HISS-equipped Honda. The HISS system prevents engine start at the ECU level — bypassing the ignition switch does not bypass the immobilizer.
Call a mobile motorcycle locksmith who carries Honda HISS programming capability. We come to your Honda anywhere in South Florida, decode the ignition, cut a new blade, and program the HISS transponder from scratch. We will need your title or registration as proof of ownership.
Kawasaki — No Key
Kawasaki transponder key systems are used on most current models. Older Kawasaki bikes — particularly those from the late 1990s and early 2000s — often use mechanical keys without transponders, which are significantly simpler to replace.
For current Kawasaki models with transponder keys call a mobile motorcycle locksmith with Kawasaki-specific programming equipment. For older mechanical key Kawasaki bikes a skilled locksmith can decode and cut on-site without programming equipment.
Yamaha — No Key
Yamaha uses YISS (Yamaha Immobilizer System) on most current models. The process is similar to Honda — the YISS system must be reset using Yamaha-specific equipment and a new transponder key programmed from scratch.
Older Yamaha models without YISS use mechanical keys. Call us with your year and model and we will tell you immediately which system your bike uses and what the replacement involves.
Harley-Davidson — No Key
Harley-Davidson's Smart Security System stores key registrations in the TSM (Turn Signal Module) or TSSM (Turn Signal Security Module). An all keys lost situation on a Harley requires accessing the TSM with H-D specific diagnostic tools, clearing the security database, and registering a new key.
This is one of the more complex motorcycle all keys lost jobs. Do not attempt to bypass the Harley Smart Security System — it does not hotwire and attempting to do so can trigger a permanent lockout requiring dealer-level tools to clear. Call a specialist.
Suzuki — No Key
Current Suzuki models use Suzuki transponder key systems. Older Suzuki bikes use mechanical keys. The process mirrors other Japanese brands — decode, cut, program. Call us with your year and model for specifics.
Ducati — No Key
Ducati is the most complex brand for all keys lost situations. Pre-2008 Ducatis used the famous Red Key system — the master key that was the only key capable of reprogramming the ECU. If the Red Key is gone on a pre-2008 Ducati the options are limited and potentially expensive. Post-2008 Ducatis use the DDS system which is more accessible with professional diagnostic equipment.
If you are buying a used pre-2008 Ducati with no key — always ask specifically about the Red Key before purchase. If it is missing, factor that cost into your offer.
BMW Motorrad — No Key
BMW motorcycles use the BMS-K module and EWS immobilizer. All keys lost on a BMW motorcycle requires BMS-K specific diagnostic equipment — not BMW car tools and not generic motorcycle programmers. This is specialist work that we handle on-site throughout South Florida.
What Information to Have Ready When You Call
When you call a motorcycle locksmith for an all keys lost situation, have this information available. It speeds up the process significantly and allows the locksmith to confirm what equipment is needed before dispatching.
Year, make, and model of the motorcycle. VIN number — located on the steering head, frame, or title. Proof of ownership — title, registration, or bill of sale in your name. Current location of the motorcycle.
What a Motorcycle Locksmith Cannot Do
We want to be honest about limitations. Some all keys lost situations involve complications beyond standard key replacement.
If a previous owner programmed the motorcycle's security system to a non-standard state — for example if the immobilizer has been modified or if a non-OEM security system has been installed — the replacement process may be more complex.
For some very new and very high security systems we will confirm coverage before dispatching rather than showing up unprepared. Call us first and we will tell you exactly what we can do for your specific bike.
The Spare Key Lesson
If this experience taught you anything, let it be this — get a spare key made immediately after the all keys lost replacement is complete. A spare key made during the same visit costs a fraction of what the all keys lost replacement cost. Store it somewhere that is not in your riding gear or on the same keyring as your primary key.
Every professional motorcycle locksmith in South Florida has a story about the customer who called us for all keys lost, watched us complete the job, and then six months later called us again for the same bike. Get the spare.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I hotwire a modern motorcycle if I have no key?
No — not on any modern motorcycle with an electronic immobilizer. The immobilizer operates at the ECU level and is not bypassed by bridging the ignition wires. Attempting to hotwire a modern motorcycle with a transponder system will start the starter motor but the engine will not fire because the immobilizer blocks the fuel injection or ignition system. On older mechanical key bikes without immobilizers hotwiring is theoretically possible but illegal if the bike is not yours.
Will the dealer make me a key with just the VIN?
Some dealers will and some will not. Policy varies by brand and by individual dealer. Most dealers require the bike to be physically present, which means a tow from wherever it is currently sitting. A mobile locksmith who comes to the bike is almost always faster and less expensive when you factor in the tow cost.
How long does all keys lost take on a motorcycle?
For most Japanese brand motorcycles — Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki — all keys lost takes 60 to 90 minutes on-site. Harley-Davidson Smart Security all keys lost takes 60 to 120 minutes. Ducati and BMW all keys lost are the most time-intensive and can take up to 2 hours depending on the specific model and security system generation.
Do you need my title or registration to make a key?
Yes. For any all keys lost situation we require proof that the motorcycle is yours. This protects both you and us. A title, current registration, or bill of sale in your name is standard. For very recently purchased bikes a signed bill of sale is typically sufficient.
